The Hokutosei is a sleeper express train that was introduced between Ueno and Sapporo in 1988 to coincide with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel, and was popular from the time it began operation as a luxury sleeper train with private sleeping compartments, lounge cars, and dining cars.

The cars used for the Hokutosei were modified for cold climates, with doors that had been converted from folding to sliding.
