The Type 001 aircraft carrier Liaoning is China's first operational aircraft carrier. Originally an unfinished Soviet-era vessel named Varyag, it was purchased by China from Ukraine in the late 1990s. After overcoming numerous challenges, it was transported to China in 2002 and underwent a decade of extensive modifications before being officially commissioned in 2012 with the pennant number '16.' In October 2024, the Liaoning carrier task group conducted distant-sea combat training, during which Liaoning and Shandong carrier groups carried out their first dual-carrier formation exercise.
